Executed during the early phase of Qi Baishi’s so-called “Late-Year Reforms” while residing in Beijing, the painting depicts Old Youngster (Ardisia crenata, commonly known as “Chinese holly” or “red berry”). It functions both as an expression of the artist’s longing to return home and as a commemorative parting gift for his friend, Fu Kan. The inscription’s explicit mention of a planned reunion the following spring, together with the “Xiangsi” seal (“Yearning”), elevates the work beyond a conventional social gift, transforming it into a poignant vehicle for homesickness, friendship, and the anticipation of reunion. This painting exemplifies Qi Baishi’s middle-period practice, uniting literati brushwork with genuine emotional expression.
