Each with a tablet-shaped back flanked by pinecone finials, the frames carved with flower-filled guilloché and beading in recessed channels, the curved arm supports joined to stop-fluted columns continuing to leaf-capped stop-fluted legs, covered in green moiré silk, stamped J.B.B. DEMAY, one inscribed in red paint '53D' and applied with a paper label inscribed '#68', the other inscribed in red paint '53F'

Jean-Baptiste Bernard Demay (1759-1848), maître in 1784.

First based on rue du Faubourg-Saint-Antoine before moving his workshop to rue de Cléry, Jean-Baptiste Bernard Demay (1759-1848) is chiefly remembered for his celebrated model of chaise en montgolfière. He is recorded to have worked for the most illustrious clients at the time, including Queen Marie-Antoinette. For examples of his elegant Louis XVI productions now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, and the Musée Carnavalet in Paris, as well as in the château de Versailles see P. Kjellberg, Le Mobilier Français du XVIIIème siècle, Paris, 1998, pp. 248-249. Demay's workshop continued operations during the Revolution, when he changed his stamp to 'DEMAY RUE DE CLERY,' and remained prosperous into the Empire and the restoration of the monarchy. A further closely related pair of bergeres, possibly from the same suite and formerly in the collection of Princesse Cécile-Caroline Murat, was sold Sotheby's, Paris, 8 October 2015, lot 171.
