Dans la vaste aire culturelle englobant les régions du Moyen et du Bas-Sepik, les crochets de suspension remplissent à la fois des fonctions pratiques dans le foyer et des rôles à signification cérémonielle. Suspendus aux poutres à l’aide de cordes, ils servaient à ranger nourriture, vêtements et autres biens précieux. Des paniers et des sacs en filet étaient suspendus aux crochets à pointes situés à l’extrémité inférieure, protégeant ainsi leur contenu des rongeurs et autres nuisibles.
Ces crochets sont souvent des figures représentant des ancêtres ou des animaux totémiques associés aux clans. De telles représentations indiquent leur rôle symbolique plus large, positionnant les crochets comme des médiateurs entre le monde matériel et le domaine des esprits. Compte tenu de son échelle remarquable, ce crochet a très probablement rempli une telle fonction. La taille imposante de la figure humaine ainsi que l’usure évidente des crochets corroborent cette interprétation. Si la section inférieure présente les motifs linéaires et circulaires caractéristiques de la sculpture iatmul, la particularité la plus saisissante de l’objet réside dans ses dimensions exceptionnelles et sa présence visuelle captivante, qui renforcent sa singularité.
