One of the most enduring symbols in watchmaking history, the Datejust was introduced in 1945 to commemorate Rolex's 40th anniversary and is still produced today. Being the first automatic chronometer with an instantaneous date aperture, the Datejust transformed the wristwatch when it was first released. This invention is now so basic that it is taken for granted. The model has changed over the years due to innumerable references, but it has never been removed from Rolex's collection.
One of the rarest Datejust iterations is the present reference 6605. It was produced for just three years, from 1956 to 1959, and was sold alongside its sister reference 6604, which was distinguished by a smooth bezel.
The watch's coveted 'roulette' date display, which alternates red numerals for even dates and black numerals for odd dates, adds even more charm and vibrancy. One of the most admired vintage Rolex characteristics, this subtle yet playful detail gives the reference 6605 a distinctive visual identity within the Datejust lineage while also enhancing the dial's character. Furthermore, the watch is complete with a white gold Jubilee bracelet featuring a highly desirable 'Big Logo' deployant clasp.
