Tamagawa Josui (Tamagawa Waterway) depicts a beautiful stretch of the waterway winding through the outskirts of Edo. Cherry trees were planted along its banks to enhance the landscape, transforming the waterway into a popular scenic spot, particularly in spring. Hiroshige makes the gently curving course of the waterway the central element of the composition. Its graceful, bow-shaped line leads the viewer’s eye deep into the scene, while the receding banks create a strong sense of distance and spatial depth. The flowering cherry trees provide a delicate seasonal frame, contrasting with the surrounding greenery and subdued tones of the distant landscape. The two-story buildings in the background are thought to represent the pleasure district of Naito-Shinjuku, introducing an urban element into the otherwise peaceful setting. The arrangement of the flowering trees, winding waterway, and distant architecture demonstrates Hiroshige’s ability to transform familiar sites around Edo into atmospheric and visually compelling landscapes.
