The upper section of a deep gorge is connected precariously by a rope bridge. Far below a waterfall descends through rocks, illuminated by the light of a crescent moon. The scene is accompanied by a Chinese poem: “Early in the morning the moonlight gleams through some thousands of trees/ The Starry river of the autumn night sky flows west of many mountain peaks” See Matthi Forrer, Hiroshige Nature and the City (London, 2023). In the earliest impressions of this design, as in the present example, the censor’s seal and the publisher’s seals appear beside the poem. The deep blue bokashi is concentrated along the upper portion of the composition, while the sky is intentionally left uncolored, creating a striking contrast and preserving the delicacy of the design.
