Seiro hanami ryakuzu (Sketch of a flower-viewing party from the pleasure quarters)

This aizuri work is one of Hiroshige’s rarest masterpieces in the fan-print format. It depicts Yoshiwara courtesans and their patrons setting out to enjoy the cherry blossoms in spring. Hiroshige demonstrates his brilliant compositional technique in adapting the scene to this highly unusual format. The sweeping curve of the embankment in the foreground echoes the lower edge of the fan, while the cherry trees rise diagonally through the composition, creating a dynamic interplay of curved and vertical forms. The embankment is rendered in pale blue, while the cherry trees are rendered in a slightly darker blue, creating a subtle contrast in tone. This ingenious arrangement guides the viewer’s eye through the scene and enhances the sense of depth within the restricted format.
