Mitsuke Tenryugawa zu (Mitsuke: Tenryu River)

Hiroshige depicts travelers crossing the broad Tenryu River by ferry at the station of Mitsuke, one of the most challenging crossings along the Tokaido. The river dominates the composition, its expansive surface contrasting with the small boats and distant figures. Hiroshige uses subtle gradations and a carefully balanced arrangement of land, water, and sky to convey the immense scale of the river and the quiet atmosphere of the crossing. The distant landscape dissolves softly into the atmosphere, demonstrating his remarkable ability to transform an ordinary journey into a poetic landscape.
