The design for this pair of candelabra by Jean-Charles Delafosse was published in his 27th cahier, Cahier de 12 flambeaux et chandeliers de table CC.4. It is reproduced with a later drawing dated 1798 from the Ecole de Györ, Hungary in an article by H.Szabolcsi entitled 'Sources Franaises de l'Art Décoratif Hongrois des XVIII-XIX Siècles', published in the Antologia di Belle Arte, Mélanges Verlet, NN.29-30, 1986,p.50-1. The designs of Jean-Charles Delafosse (1734-89/91) included in the two volumes of Nouvelle Iconologie Historique ou Attributs Hiérogliphiques , Paris, first published in 1768 and reissued in various editions in 1771, 1773, 1776 and 1785, were extremely influential in disseminating the neo-classical style throughout Europe.
A similar candelabra with twin-branches, reputedly signed by Delafosse, is illustrated in Le XVIIIème Siècle franais , ed. Hachette, 1956, p. 130, fig. C, whilst a further pair was sold from the collection of M. Hubert de Givenchy , Christie's Monaco, 4 December 1993, lot 17 (499,500 FF).
A further candlestick with similar base is illustrated in Les grands orfèvres de Louis XIII á Charles X, ed. Hachette, 1965, p.199.
