AN ATTIC RED-FIGURED BELL-KRATER
Circa 390-370 B.C.
The obverse with a gathering of gods and satyrs, Dionysus to the right, leaning forward with his right leg raised, nude but for a dotted mantle draped over his left elbow and around his right thigh, a thyrsus in his left hand, his right hand raised toward his mouth, Apollo facing him, a lyre held out before him, nude but for a dotted mantle, a laurel branch against his right shoulder, a satyr seated between them playing the double-flute, Athena seated to the left, facing left but looking back over her shoulder, a spear or staff in her right hand, her shield leaning against her left side, and a satyr at the far left stepping up on a platform and looking back toward the gods behind him; the reverse with three standing draped youths; a band of meander with checkered squares below the scenes, laurel below the rim, fanning palmettes below the handles, tongues around the handle roots
