1930 STUTZ EIGHT SUPERCHARGED COUPE
COACHWORK BY LANCEFIELD
Chassis No. 31312
Black and aluminum.
Engine: Supercharged eight cylinder, in-line, 322 ci, 155 bhp; Gearbox: four speed manual; Brakes: hydraulic on four wheels; Suspension: semi-elliptic springs. Right hand drive.
Carrying a low slung one-off coupe body by Lancefield of London on one of twenty-four supercharged chassis' ever produced by Stutz, this is surely a candidate for the most exotic example of the marque ever created.
Headlamps are by Carl Zeiss while the fender lamps are by Lucas and sidelamps are stock Stutz units. One of the headlamps has a cracked lens.
The red leather interior is contrasted with custom wood trim. Seats are adjustable shell-style buckets with side-facing occasional seats behind them. There is also seating in the rear compartment of the body. Interior leather is all good for patterns during restoration.
Boyd covering was originally done in Weymann-style fabric. When Mr. Miller acquired the car he sent it to be recovered in the aluminum in which it is being offered for sale. This automobile was very likely originally supplied by Warwick Wright Ltd., Stutz's main dealer in the UK and also the supplier of the supercharged cars for the Stutz team's assault on LeMans in 1929.
Set off by twin sidemounted tires on wire wheels, cycle-style fenders and elongated steps in place of normal runningboards, a sliding roof panel along with a slit of a windshield, this striking motorcar holds the potential to become one of the premier entrants on the international concours d'elegance circuit. It is, of course, a Full Classic as recognized by the Classic Car Club of America.
