With global participation by bidders from 41 countries and five continents, Asian Art Week totalled US$54,490,000 (including buyer’s premium) in New York. During the 15 days of live and online sales, five world auction records were set and nine lots achieved over US$1 million across all categories of Asian art. Attesting to the sharp increase in online engagement over the past year, the sale pages drew unique visitors from over 117 countries leading into the week.

The top lot of the sale series was the Luboshez Gong, a late Shang dynasty bronze ritual wine vessel and cover which sold for $8,604,000. It was the highlight of Shang: Early Chinese Ritual Bronzes from the Daniel Shapiro Collection that was 99% sold by value.

Other notable results during the week included a woodblock print of The Great Wave by Katsushika Hokusai, which realised US$1,590,000 and set a world auction record for the artist; and Indian modernist pioneer Francis Newton Souza’s Family, from 1946, which realised US$822,000 and set a new record for a work on paper by the artist.

The Indian, Himalayan and Southeast Asian Works Art sale featured the second half of an important private collection of Gandharan art. A standout of the collection, a monumental 3rd- to 4th-century gray schist figure of Buddha Shakyamuni, sold for US$1,950,000.

The highly anticipated Important Chinese Art from the Junkunc Collection realised US$5,951,500 with 87% sold by lot and 94% sold by value. Among other finely carved jades, a 17th- to 18th-century white jade figure of a mythical beast produced the highest price of the sale at US$525,000.

The week closed out with the Important Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art sale, which achieved a total of US$16,507,625 with 89% sold by lot and 93% sold by value.
