Jusepe de Ribera

Jusepe de Ribera was one of the most celebrated painters of the Spanish Baroque, renowned for his naturalist approach and profound psychological insight.

Born in Xàtiva, near Valencia, in 1591, he left Spain at a young age and spent almost his entire career in Italy. After periods in Parma and Rome, he settled in Naples in 1616, then under Spanish rule. There, he became the painter to the Spanish viceroys and quickly established himself as one of the city’s leading artists.

Inspired by Caravaggio's revolutionary use of light and realism, Ribera developed a distinctive style characterised by a dramatic use of chiaroscuro, richly textured surfaces and a striking naturalism. His saints, philosophers and martyrs possess remarkable physical presence, as seen in The Martyrdom of Saint Bartholomew (1634) and Jacob with the Flock of Laban (c. 1638). Whether depicting ecstatic visions or brutal martyrdom, Ribera balanced visceral realism with the ability to convey emotional and spiritual intensity.

Alongside his celebrated religious paintings, Ribera produced compelling portraits, mythological scenes and depictions of ancient philosophers, often portraying them as humble, contemplative figures drawn from everyday life. His mastery of etching further extended his artistic influence, making him one of the most accomplished printmakers of his generation. Ribera’s work profoundly shaped Neapolitan painting and influenced artists including Luca Giordano, Salvator Rosa and Bartolomé Esteban Murillo. He died in Naples in 1652.

Ribera’s enduring reputation rests on the dramatic power and technical brilliance of his work, which is represented in major collections including the Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid, the Museo di Capodimonte in Naples and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
