Vincent van Gogh drawings

Van Gogh’s drawings, numbering over 1,100, are key to understanding his development as an artist. Though overshadowed by his paintings, these works highlight his dynamic creativity and innovative approach. Primarily self-taught, Van Gogh saw drawing as fundamental to his art, using it to explore subjects, master techniques and refine compositions. His practice spanned portraits, figure studies, landscapes and scenes of rural life. The drawings, particularly those from his time in Provence, exhibit increasing complexity, underscoring his growth as a draftsman. For Van Gogh, drawing was both a means of personal expression and a vital tool in his artistic evolution.
