20th Century Day Sale

20th Century Day Sale

Sale Overview

This September, Christie’s presents a monumental gathering of 20th century masters, whose groundbreaking visions continue to shape artistic discourse today. Bridging continents and traditions, these exceptional works chart a rich narrative of modernity, innovation, and enduring influence.

Leading the sale are two iconic abstractions by Gerhard Richter, Abstraktes Bild and Fuji, created at the height of the artist's celebrated abstract practice. The Asian Modern curation is led by Zao Wou-Ki's beautifully atmospheric mountainside 27.10.1992, casting a lyrical spell of colour and texture. The group is further distinguished by Pablo Picasso's Deux Têtes (recto); Buste d'homme et sexe féminin (verso), the legendary artist's final ballad to love and mortality, a profound and reflective piece echoing the artist's long career. Paul Delvaux's mysterious Faubourg opens a rare window to the artist's dearest memory, while Marc Chagall's colourful Le cirque brings a bright and energetic rendition of the artist's most iconic circus scenery. Following are works from Chu Teh-Chun's rare and coveted Snow Scenery, while N° 546, by contrast, radiates fiery hues and expressive force. The sale also features Wu Guanzhong's celebrated terraced fields, rendered in a luminous silvery-grey palette that evokes Sichuan's poetic ‘mirror fields.’

Further enriching the sale are works by Kazuo Shiraga, Léonard Tsuguharu Foujita, Ju Ming, Lalan and Kim Tschang-Yeul, complemented by masterworks from Henri Matisse, Hans Hofmann, Lynne Drexler, as well as Fernando Botero's Woman with Fruit, a captivating meditation on abundance and temptation. Together, these exceptional works celebrate a rich legacy of artistic innovation across cultures and generations.
