Sale Overview

Christie’s will present exceptional designs of 20th and 21st century artists and architects in our twice annual auction Design. Early highlights from the turn-of-the-century include Viennese Secessionist masterworks by Koloman Moser and Josef Hoffmann, Property from the Collection of Hida Takayama Museum of Art. These important works will be presented alongside spectacular British Arts and Crafts carpet designed by C. F. Voysey and highly important designs by Frank Lloyd Wright for historically significant commissions such as the Francis W. Little House (1902) and Avery Coonley House (1908), formerly in the collection of Barbra Streisand. 

French Art Deco is represented by carpet designs by Emile-Jacques Ruhlmann and unique Ivan da Silva Bruhns carpets commission for Ambassador Gonzalo and Isabel Rosales de Zaldumbide, a rare circular table by Armand Albert Rateau, Jean-Michel Frank, Pierre Chareau and Paul-Dupre Lafon. Post-war icons of French Modernism include a rare desk and chair by Charlotte Perriand, rare Jean Prouve banquette and survey of chair designs, and stylish design by Jean Royère. Three exceptional designs by the sculptor Isamu Noguchi round out the sale, including a celebrated Chess table from 1944. 

Italian design of the second half of the 20th century is represented by works from Gio Ponti’s important commission Villa Arreaza and his own at Via Dezza in Milan, showcased amongst Property from an Important American Collection which includes seminal works by Piero Fornasetti, the ‘Architettura’ series, and rare Fausto Melotti ceramics from the 1950s. Finally, a beloved Gabriella Crespi ‘Z’ desk, Property from a Hamptons Private Collection, will be offered alongside early works by Ettore Sottsass from the 1950s. 

Modern masters Les Lalanne, with a ‘Banc crocodiles’, Harry Bertoia’s ‘Untitled ‘Dandelion’’, Maria Pergay’s ‘Flying Carpet Daybed’, and several designs by Wendell Castle represent important art and design of the second half of the 20th century.

Michael Jefferson is a International Senior Specialist in the Design department in Chicago. He will be contributing to the development of a new global vision for Design and will partner closely with Post-War and Contemporary Art at Christie’s.

Mr. Jefferson joins Christie’s after 18 years with Wright Auction in Chicago, where he was Senior Vice President and Senior Specialist of Design. Jefferson was instrumental in a highly creative approach to selling Design at auction, developing sales with a focus on Italian and Scandinavian design, single-owner collections and thematic auctions that pushed the boundaries of the market. Receiving a BFA from the University of Michigan in 1995, Jefferson has worked in various fields in the arts and takes a wholistic approach to the market, providing a synthesis between auctions, creative practice and collecting.

Vice President, Specialist, Head of Sale | Design

Victoria Tudor began her career with Christie’s in 2008 base in New York as a Specialist with the Decorative Arts department. Since 2016, Victoria has been a contributing member of the Private and Iconic Collections team participating in The Private Collection of President & Mrs. Ronald Reagan (2016); the landmark sale of The Peggy and David Rockefeller Collection (2018); overseeing the single owner sale of addable art and antiques dealer Mr. Joel Chen of JF Chen , Los Angeles, Ca. (2018); spearheading the first online only sale of a major single owner consignment The Collection of A. Jerrold Perenchio (2020); and collaborating across the Asian works of art department for Lacquer, Jade, Bronze, Ink: The Florence and Herbert Irving Collection (2019) and Sacred and Imperial: The James and Marilynn Alsdorf Collection (2020). In 2021, Victoria joined the Design department as Head of Sale to spearhead the New York calendar of sales for the dedicated department.

A native of Chicago, Il., Victoria received her Bachelor’s from Bowdoin College in Maine with a focus in Latin American Literature, Spanish Language and International Relations. She is currently pursuing her Gemological degree with the Gemological Institute of American and is an aspirant auctioneer for Christie’s.
