Christie’s Design sales celebrate a century of creativity and innovation. From stunning Tiffany Studios stained glass to rare pieces by contemporary masters, this spring season was marked by roaring demand and exceptional results.
In Paris, the auction exceeded expectations, more than doubling its low estimate to realise €23 million. Driven by international participation and strong competition among collectors, the sale was marked by several outstanding results. The highlight of the sale was 'Pomme de Ben' by Claude Lalanne and François-Xavier Lalanne, which sparked intense bidding and achieved €7,502,000, setting a new world auction record for a work by the iconic duo. Jean Royère’s 'Ours polaire' armchairs realised €1,117,600, while Albert Cheuret’s Console aux hérons achieved €889,000, setting a new world record for the artist. Eileen Gray’s 'Persan' bed sold for €787,400.
Surpassing $20 million against a $11.4 million low estimate, our Design sale in New York delivered a market-leading performance. Anchoring the auction was François‑Xavier Lalanne’s An Important Set of Four ‘Grenouille’ Fountains, from the collection of Alexandra Marshall, which realised $6,297,000. From the collection of Henry S. McNeil, Jr. new records were set for American artists such as George Nakashima and Sam Maloof, and Tiffany Studios saw robust results, including the ‘Nasturtium’ Floor Lamp — which sold for an impressive $330,200 — confirming Christie’s as the destination for iconic design.
