Old Master & British Drawings
Sale Overview
Christie’s Old Master & British Drawings sale features a wide selection of works from the 16th to the 19th Centuries by Italian, French, Northern and British draftsmen. Headlining the sale is an important, newly discovered sheet by Federico Zuccaro for the decoration of the Villa Caprarola, as well as a complete series of twenty drawings on vellum by the Netherlandish artist Johannes Wierix. Additional highlights include a spirited red-chalk sketch by the young Jean-Antoine Watteau, a powerful figure study by François Boucher, a preparatory head study by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres for a figure in his portrait of the composer Luigi Cherubini, and a lyrical landscape study by Thomas Gainsborough.
