The Sam Josefowitz Collection: Graphic Masterpieces by Rembrandt van Rijn - Part II
Sale Overview
Following on from the tremendous success of the sales from this fabled collection last year, Christie’s now presents The Sam Josefowitz Collection: Graphic Masterpieces by Rembrandt van Rijn – Part II. The auction will include many rare and important prints from the greatest ensemble of the artist’s graphic oeuvre still in private hands. Rembrandt’s etchings were an enduring passion of the late Sam Josefowitz, and no other collector of the 20th century was able to build as comprehensive and fine a collection of the Dutch master’s prints as Sam Josefowitz.
Ninety works will be offered in a dedicated live auction on 5 December in London, which together will provide a fascinating insight into Rembrandt’s experimental approach, from his earliest, spontaneous studies of faces and people to the most accomplished portraits, biblical scenes, landscapes and nudes of his celebrated late period. Amongst them are many great rarities, highly important subjects, and outstanding masterpieces of printmaking, whose provenance can, in some cases, be traced all the way back to the 17th century.
The sale will be an exceptional opportunity to acquire some of the finest and most moving graphic works by Rembrandt van Rijn, an artist who not only mastered but transformed the medium to express an emotional depth and atmospheric subtlety that is unique to this day.
