The drawing is related to a painting of Erich Goeritz and his wife executed in 1922, from the Goeritz collection in London, C. Berend-Corinth, Die Gemälde von Lovis Corinth, Munich, 1958, no. 858, ill. p. 770. In a letter to C. Berend-Corinth written in 1930, Dr. Goeritz describes his sitting for the portrait. He states that he brought roses to Corinth because he considered the artist a great portrait painter and he also hoped the artist would include the flowers in the picture. Goeritz also admits that he placed a large mirror behind the artist, so he could watch him executing the portrait. While Corinth was busy executing the portrait of Mrs. Goeritz, Mr. Goeritz spoke about Reynolds and Gainsborough. Corinth replied by saying that he would also be an English painter of 'sweet things' and executed the neck of his wife with a quick pencil stroke.
