Lot Essay
Bred in 1837 by Mr. Nowell of Underley, Little Wonder was by Muley out of Lacerta. He was purchased by D. Majoribanks Robertson. At two, he ran second in the Nursery Stakes at Newmarket. At three, he won the 1840 Derby run on Wednesday, June 3 ridden by W. Macdonald and trained by William Forth. He went off at odds of 50-1 and won by almost a length beating the favorite Lord Westiminister's Launcelot who went on to win the St. Leger. The Derby was attended by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, whose reception apparently was so lacking in enthusiasm and respect, that she did not attend another Derby.
