A RARE NAMBOKUCHO HOSHI BACHI [BOWL WITH STANDING RIVETS]
Nambokucho Period (Circa 1350)
The simple thirty-eight plate russet iron bowl of typical shape with hoshi [standing rivets] on each plate gradually reducing in size towards the top of each plate, the four hibiki no ana are set low on either side and each fitted with a shakudo rim and gilt fluted washer

Lot Essay

Helmets of this period are rare outside Japan. The condition of this example is excellent for its age and the brim plate [koshimaki] shows signs of only having been mounted once and could well be a later replacement which often happened where successive remounting had weakened the original.
