Shown seated atop a waisted lotus plinth with hands in a variation of dhyanamudra, wearing crisply modeled robes and cowl and a foliate crown centered by a figure of Amitabha Buddha, covered with a glaze of ivory tone, the back incised with the four-character potter's mark of He Chaozong

Lot Essay

Another figure of this model, also bearing an incised He Chaozong mark, is illustrated by P.J. Donnelly, Blanc de Chine, New York, 1969, pl. 150 D. On p. 165, the author refers to this figure as exemplifying 'admirably the First Grade of Middle Life'.
