An English mahogany and inlaid longcase clock, second quarter 19th century
The case with hood with brass-capped swan-neck pediment and outset square section columns, with conforming pilasters flanking the tracery arch top short trunk door (split to centre), on plinth (split to centre) with outswept feet (one part lacking), the 14in. white dial with painted automata figures of Adam and Eve beside a rocking Tree of Knowledge to the arch, with spandrels painted with figures of the Evangelists, the white chapter ring with rubbed ...Wigan signature, the centre with allegorical scene of a mother with her children flanked by Brittannia and watched over by an angel, a ship sinking in the background, with false plate to the four pillar rack striking movement with anchor escapement -- 92½in. (235cm.) high
