Lot Essay

George Bowles, son of Humphrey Bowles of Wanstead Grove, Essex and brother of Rebecca, Lady Northwick and uncle to her three daughters Anne, Harriet and Elizabeth, known as 'the Rushout Sisters'.

A miniature of George Bowles by Henry Bone belonging to Hon. Gerald Ponsonby was exhibited at the South Kensington Exhibition in 1865, no. 661 and was sold Sotheby's, London, 10 November 1979, lot 83. For another enamel of the sitter by Bone, see Sotheby's, London, 9 July 1984, lot 70B.
