1959 GOGGOMOBIL T400 LIMOUSINE
Chassis No. 01121136
Turquoise blue and white with grey interior
Engine: Glas twin cylinder, 2-stroke, 392cc; Gearbox: four speed and reverse, electric shift; Brakes: four wheel hydraulic; Suspension: swing axle and coil springs. Left hand drive
The Goggomobil cars were a subsidiary of GLAS agricultural machinery, an old and established firm in Germany. They started producing scooters called the 'Goggo' after the designer's nephew 'Goggi', but in 1955 he saw a growing market for small cars and the first Goggomobil was produced. They were available in 250cc, 300cc and 400cc, and being of high build quality they were an instant success across the Continent.
In 1958 the company started to produce a four-stroke power unit with a variety of different coachwork and, although popular, they never achieved quite the same breakthrough in the domestic market as the two stroke; however, they were very active in motorsport in the period.
A microcar 'Limousine' may be a contradiction in terms, but Goggomobil built the T-400 as a 'True Automobile in Miniature'. Its rear-mounted 392cc engine and saloon-like coachwork ensured it sold in numbers that surpassed any microcar ever built, with 250,000 produced.
This particular car has been the subject of a meticulous rebuild of the highest quality. It is beautifully finished in turquoise blue with a white roof and has been completely retrimmed in grey vinyl with white piping. All the brightwork was replated or replaced and the engine and gearbox were completely rebuilt. Now presented in immaculate all-round condition, this limousine is ready for a new owner to enjoy.
The car is sold with a US title document.
