Lot Essay

The identification of the sitter as the courtesan 'Kitty' Fisher, indicated by the inscription, seems possible on the basis of comparison with the other known portraits of her by Sir Joshua Reynolds and Nathaniel Hone (for which see J. Kerslake, National Portrait Gallery, Early Georgian Portraits, I, pp. 76-8, II, pls. 195-9). A portrait of her by Nathaniel Hone, signed and dated 1765, to which this portrait can be compared, is in the National Portrait Gallery (no. 2354; Kerslake, op.cit., I, pp 74-5, II, pl. 195).
