An Unusual 15-Bore Central Italian Snaphaunce Gun
By the Zanotti family, Lugo, third quarter of the 18th Century
With short barrel turned and belled at the muzzle and with tapering sighting flat, the breech engraved with a male profile bust and with mouldings at the rear, engraved tang, flat bevelled lock engraved with profile busts and foliage terminating in monster-heads, the cock and steel each retained from the inside by a bolt, the head chiselled in relief with a profile bust of Tusco-Emilian inspiration, the inner side of the plate signed with the initials 'CZ', moulded figured walnut full stock (some staining and further minor defects) carved in relief with floral sprays, iron mounts of Tusco-Emilian type pierced and engraved with foliage, monster-heads, and profile portrait busts, engraved turned and faceted ramrod-pipes, and iron sling mount fitted to the tail of the side-plate (ramrod and forward sling mount missing, some pitting, two butt-cap screws replaced, one incomplete)
