An unusual 19th-Century brass Islamic armillary sphere,
the 2¼-inch (5.7cm.) diameter engraved celestial globe at the centre with constellations depicted by mythical beasts and figures and labelled in Latin, the ecliptic and equatorial graduated with Roman characters, held on a central axis inclined at an angle of approximately 23°, within seven concentric meridians on the same axis, the first six being movable, all with engraved graduations, the first ring being the only one engraved on both sides, the reverse graduated with Roman characters and labelled sections including Black, Sayday and Avbril, the face graduated in degrees and labelled at the four cardinal points clockwise 0 - 270 - 90 - 180, the subsequent rings graduated with Roman characters with various further labellings, the outer ring with 3-inch (7.6cm.) diameter brass sunball mounted at the top of the central axis, the whole raised on a baluster turned column and plinth base -- 22¼in. (56.5cm.) high
