A 19th-Century lacquered-brass surveying theodolite,
signed on one of the vertical supports for the axis J. Casartelli Manchester, the telescope with rack and pinion focusing, object glass dust cap, four spider's-web adjusters, bubble level, located on twin fold-over clamps with Y-supports on the limb over the vertical half-circle with silvered scale, the axis raised on twin shaped supports on the horizontal plate, with compass box, the silvered dial signed J. Casartelli Market St., Manchester, the half-circle engraved on one side with scale for Diff of Hypo & Base, with single silvered vernier, the horizontal circle with chamfered silvered scale, vernier, level and cross-bubble, tangent-screw fine adjustment with clamp, on four-screw tripod mounting, with mounting plate, in the original fitted mahogany case with inset brass carrying handle -- 13¼in. (33.6cm.) high
