PODERE IL PALAZZINO
The greatest examples of wines from the Gaiole in Chianti boast exceptional finesse, delicacy, warmth and richness; but only a scant few producers in this district consistently achieve outstanding results -- among them Podere Il Palazzino. In his 5th edition Wine Buyer's Guide, Robert Parker Jr. lauds Il Palazzino's superb performance over many vintages: "The quality of these wines over the last decade has been virutlaly flawless."
Owners Andrea and Alessandro Sderci have dedicated themselves to the meticulous production of some of the finest Sangiovese wines in the region, which exhibit unusual "intensity and multiple dimensions (RPJ)." The wines received high acclaim and scores from Steven Tanzer, Decanter magazine, and the general wine press. The Chianti Classico Riserva is primarily Sangiovese from the best barrique aged, hand-selected Sangiovese from the best plots. Total extension of the estate is 5.2 hectares, sited at 400 meters above sea leve, with production of the wines at 15,000 and 8,000 bottles per year, respectively.
Grosso Sanese--Vintage 1990
Tuscany, Podere Il Palazzino
In original carton
The 1990 Grosso Sanese exhibits more promise than flattering aromas and flavors. It displays an impressively saturated dark ruby/purple color, and a reticent but emerging bouquet of smoky oak, leafy tobacco, and copious quantities of black-raspberry fruit. The tannins and surprisingly high acidity give the wine a toughness and backward feel, but this is one case where there is more than enough fruit to carry it for 10-15 years.
