The upper surface of the cover crisply carved with three sinuous dragons in mutual pursuit amidst turbulent waves, both sides of the cover and the body with six striding dragons, the interiors lacquered black, the cover incised and gilded with four-character, Jiulong Baohe, Nine Dragons Treasure Box, and interior of the box similarly incised with a four-character reign mark (mouth rims repaired)
6 5/8 in. (16.9 cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

A box of almost the same design and size but without inscription, is in the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, illustrated in Hai-wai Yi-chen, Chinese Art in Overseas Collections: Lacquerware, p. 157, no. 154.
