A MIYAMOTO MUSASHI-TYPE TSUBA
EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1650)

The iron plate is formed as two rings joined at the top and bottom of the seppa-dai. The round edge has some iron bones and the remainder of the plate has a smooth surface--height 6.9cm., width 6.7cm., thickness 5.5mm.

See Harris, The Book of Five Rings (New York, 1982), no. 14, p. 25, for a very similar guard. Both Miyamoto Musashi (1584-1645) and a priest called Manichibo, who came from Higo Province, made this type of tsuba.
