The rounded oval shakudo plate is decorated in flush inlay of gold, silver, copper, and shibuichi and depicts a variety of insects. There are five insects on the face and four on the reverse. The hitsu-ana is original--height 6.8cm., width 6.2cm., thickness 4mm.
Lot Essay
This is a classic example of early Edo period Kaga inlay. Although the tsuba makers are not identified we know that they were direct retainers of the Maeda family, daimyo of Kanazawa, Kaga Province.
