A SWORDSMITH SCHOOL TSUBA
LATE EDO/EARLY MEIJI PERIOD (CIRCA 1865-75), SIGNED YOSHITANE

The oval, polished iron plate is carved in low relief with a Chinese- style landscape on the face. The reverse is carved with a bold, low-relief design of grapes and grape leaves--height 7.2cm., width 6.7cm., thickness 3.5mm.

Lot Essay

This tsuba appears to be the work of Honjo Yoshitane II (fl. circa 1850-1890). He was the son of Yoshitane I (fl. circa 1828-1875). Little is known of his life, and his work is greatly overshadowed by that of his famous father.
