A NARA SCHOOL TSUBA
EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1800)

The oval copper plate is carved with a stone surface and depicts Shoki carved in very low relief. The figure, inlaid in gold and shakudo, carries a silver sword. The reverse is carved with a design of rocks beside a stream, bamboo, and gold lichen. The edge has a shakudo rim cover--height 7.4cm., width 6.9cm., thickness 4.5mm.

Lot Essay

This style of tsuba, usually attributed to the Sugiura Joi school (1701-1761), is more correctly designated Nara school.
