This design was used by several of the Higo schools throughout the Edo period. The design is first to be seen in the work of the Owari sukashi school of the Muromachi period (circa 1500).

The iron plate is formed of four interlocking rings that join to combine in a four-lobed shape (mokko). The center of the plate is a circle with two matching hitsu-ana--height and width 8.2cm., thickness 4.5mm.
