A MEISSEN BOURDALOUE
CIRCA 1730, BLUE ENAMEL CROSSED SWORDS MARK

Of typical shape, with scroll handle and shell thumbpiece, enamelled in the Kakiemon style in blue, iron-red and turquoise, with flowering branches and leaves enriched with gilding issuing from yellow and blue rockwork and with scattered insects beneath a brown line rim (crack to body near handle, slight scratching to rim)--8½in. (21.5cm.) wide overall

Lot Essay

The earliest known chamber-pot of this shape is a Delft example made circa 1710. Other Meissen examples are known in the collections of Baroness Van Zuylen Van Nyevelt (Christie's London, June 8, 1956, lot 85) and Erich von Goldschmidt-Rothschild (Herman Ball & Paul Graupe, Berlin, March 23-25, 1931, lot 574).
