A LACQUER INCENSE BOX (KOBAKO)
Edo period, (17th-18th Century)
Of rectangular shape containing an interior tray which holds six small rectangular covered boxes, the exterior decorated in low-relief gold lacquer with crests, probably of the Inagaki family, and flower medallions attached to scrolling foliage, all on a dense nashiji ground, the edges fundame; each of the small inner boxes also decorated in gold and black lacquer with different plants or birds, whisks and a fan on a yellow nashiji ground, the interiors roiro-nuri repeated on the interior and base of the tray, the exterior of the tray roiro-nuri, mounted with gilt-metal cord rings cast with crests matching those on the box
