A rare and interesting pair of official VOC charts for the navigation of Dutch vessels on the final leg of the Texel/Batavia trade route through the Sunda Straits to Batavia and Bantam. Both charts were drawn up by Isaak de Graaf in Amsterdam in 1739 but it would appear that the additional place-names for islands and the new depth soundings which have been marked in red may well have been added by the official VOC cartographer in Batavia. The Batavia/Bantam coastal chart has a high proportion of additional information in red providing a detailed chart of these waters. The VOC charts were purchased by the captains of the vessels, most charts priced at 6 guilders and 10 stuivers, the Batavia/Bantam was priced more cheaply at 3 guilders 10 struivers. VOC charts are rarely seen at auction, 5 examples of de Graaf's Batavia/Bantam chart are recorded in institutional hands in Holland. For de Graaf's the Sunda Strait chart, similarly 5 examples are recorded in Holland. (2)
