(1797-1860) was appointed Cadet in the East India Company's Service 1817, became Ensign that year in the Bengal Army and Lieutenant, 19th Native Infantry, 1818; he served during the Third Mahratta War, 1817-18 and in the Oude, 1819-20; during the First Burma War he was attached to the Cavalry Division, December 1825 and was present at the siege and capture of Bhurtpoor; Captain 38th Native Infantry, 1830; Major 1840 and was appointed Deputy Commissary General with the Force for China, March 1840; served throughout the First China War, 1840-42 and was present at the First capture of Chusan, Storming of the Canton Heights and the action of 30 May, 1841; was also present at the taking of Amoy, assault of the Heights at Chinhae, Ningpo, the Storming of the Sigoun Heights, Chupoo, Woosung and Shanhaee, the assault and capture of Chin-Keang-Foo, the advance to and the investment of Nanking (Brevet of Lieutenant Colonel, C.B.), Mentioned favourably in Despatches (London Gazette 8th October, 1841 and 6th September, 1842); Lieutenant Colonel 31st Native Infantry, 1846; Commissary General, 1849; was appointed Colonel of the 43rd, 60th and 2nd Native Infantry, 1851, 1852 and 1856 respectively; Major General 1854; Major General Hawkins died in Europe, 1860
