Lot Essay

The chest was furnished in the 1820s with an ebonised stand (now missing), which was commissioned by Hugh Percy, 3rd Duke of Northumberland (d. 1847) for display at Northumberland House, London. It was transferred to Syon House, Middlesex in the 1870s and featured in the photograph catalogue prepared in the 1920s. (A copy is in the National Art Library, Victoria & Albert Museum).
