Lot Essay

John Harwood's self-winding mechanism, patented in 1922, was the first automatic watch movement to go into series production. The weakness of the design was the oscillating balance which would transmit shocks to the mechanism at the end of each oscillation. The Rolex design with its rotor rotating through 360 degrees in either direction was much smoother and more efficient. This watch is illustrated on page 81.
