A TALL COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION, WITH WIDE MARGINS. The Ricciardetto was conceived in the autumn of 1715, after Forteguerri had been discussing with friends the difficulties of writing narrative poetry: the poem is much influenced by the work of Berni and Pulci, but above all by Ariosto's Orlando Furioso. Although Forteguerri adopted the pseudonym 'Carteromaco' in the hopes that the work would not affect his ecclesiastical career, he died without achieving his ambition of being elected a cardinal. Gamba 2241; Morazzoni p. 220.
