A Hessian-engraved humourous mining goblet
Circa 1750
(Bergleutepokal) the funnel bowl engraved in Mattschnitt with a continuous scene of figures at various pursuits under many inscriptions das Feuer bin ich bewahrt das Wasser hat mich nicht gespart..etc., Vier Schelme lauern hier zwey andere zubetrugen. Verwahrt den Luder wohl nur lasst die Schlüssel liegen...etc. etc...., depicting four gentlemen in conversation at a table, with a seated dignitary watching, further with a seated bearded man held by three gentlemen, with many inscriptions, further with a portrait medallion above interafcis and beside the entrance of a mine (Freiguth?) with two miners, some of their tools under a rain shower, the filled lower part with tears, upon a heavy multi-knopped stem, the domed foot folded and engraved with a laurel wreath
