A VISIGOTHIC GILT BRONZE BELT-BUCKLE
circa late 5th-early 6th century a.d.
The club-shaped tongue with a blue glass cabochon set in the basal cube, hooked to the oval loop which is joined to the composite rectangular attachment-plate by a folded flap, the attachment-plate with a thick frame ornamented with a zig-zag pattern, riveted at the corners to a plate decorated with interlocking triangles, in the corners a rectangular collar each set with a pyramidal red glass inlay, in the center a two-step collar set with a similar inlay, the four collars joined to the central one by small cylindrical collars originally set with now-missing stone or glass inlays, traces of gilding on the central collar and the plate
