De Diego, born in Madrid, devoted himself entirely to painting beginning in 1926. Prior to this time he pursued many careers including the design of scenery, costumes, textiles and jewelry, illustration, acting, dance and theater. During the 1930's he was involved with WPA mural projects and in the 1940's he became associated with Man Ray, Marcel Duchamp and Max Ernst in New York City. De Diego purchased a home in Woostock in the 1950's and moved there permanently in 1961. Ballet Masque, most likely inspired by his past interest in theater and dance, combines his muralist training and surrealist attitudes.
