A fine 18th-Century brass Butterfield-pattern horizontal compass sundial,
signed on the horizontal plate LeMaire Fils AParis, engraved with hours for latitudes 52°, 49°, 46° and 43°, the compass with initials for eight compass points, blued-iron needle with brass cap and glazed cover, the folding gnomon with bird-shaped support and graduated 40°-60°, the underside engraved with the latitudes for twenty-one continental cities and towns and one turned brass foot, in the original orange plush-lined fishskin-covered case -- 3 5/8in. (9.2cm.) long
