ANNIUS, Johannes (editor). Auctores vetustissimi, Rome: Eucharius Silber, 10 July - 3 August 1498. 2° (310 x 212mm). 216 leaves including the initial blank and the final register/colophon leaf, 42 lines of commentary round text, commentary in roman letter, text in gothic, large woodcut view of Rome on M1v. (Ownership inscription cut away from head of a2 and repaired, repaired worming in the margins throughout, more severe at the end, last few leaves lightly discoloured and spotted). Early 17th-century vellum, original vellum stiffeners from a 14th-century manuscript and 2 original endleaves preserved. (Spine torn and with a small piece missing, new endpapers).
FIRST EDITION of this work of pure fiction by the otherwise eminent theologian and historian Giovanni Nanni of Viterbo (1432-1502) who pretended to have discovered lost works by Cato, Propertius, Xenophon, Philo Judaeus, Antoninus Pius and others and then appended commentaries to them (an edition without the commentary appeared at Venice in the same year). His fraud was not discovered until late in the sixteenth century. Nanni's brilliance at preaching caused him to be advanced by Sixtus IV and Alexander VI although the latter's son Cesare disliked him intensely and probably had him murdered. This is the issue without the papal privilege on f.12v. HC 1130; GW 2015; BMC IV, 118; Sander 407; Goff A-748.
