Lot Essay

Hugh Cecil Lowther (1857-1944) was a noted sportsman, considered by some to be of world class as a boxer. He is remembered today for the Lonsdale belts which he donated to the National Sporting Club. In his own time, he was nationally renowned for his sartorial elegance, his side whiskers, nine inch cigars and gardenia buttonholes. His clothes were reputedly all woven wool from the sheep which grazed on the fells near Lowther Castle.
